Dropbox to Sync Only Certain Files

Dropbox to Sync Only Certain Files

This article is about using dropbox to sync most of your files to the rest of your computers, and only a few files on another one due to space restraints.

Ever have a secondary machine (like me) that doesn’t necessarily have a lot of hard-drive space (like me), but you still wanna be able to sync stuff to it from the rest of your computers (again: like me)?

Here’s the solution I decided to implement:

You all know about dropbox, right? If not, you ought to go check it out. It’s a great tool for syncing your files across computers, and even has a LAN sync for faster file transfers when your computers are on the same network at the same time.
There are many suggestions for uses of dropbox across the Internet that I’ve found; however, there’s just one that I thought of that I’ve yet to see written about.

Dropbox has this wonderful feature where you can privately share folders and files with other people. The solution for syncing a select set of files to a computer with limited space, and still have those files sync across the rest of the dropboxes you have on the rest of your machines is really simple.

  1. Make a new dropbox account. This is the one that goes on your hard-drive space challenged machine. (No, you can’t link accounts so far as I know, but this is essential that you have a different account for this machine, and we’ll get to why in Step 2.)
  2. Go into your regular dropbox, create a new folder (or find a current one(s)) that you want to sync to this other machine, and created a shared folder. You can do this on your local dropbox installation (2a), or on the website(2b). You make the folder, share it, enter the email address of your new dropbox account and start adding the files you want there.
    1. Find/Made the folder(s) you want to share with this other machine (i.e. your new dropbox account for it).
    2. Right-Click on it/them and go down to the ‘Dropbox option’, when it expands, click “Share this folder”. Dropbox should pop up in your browser.
    3. Enter the email address of your new dropbox account.
    1. Go to https://www.dropbox.com and log in with your typical account for most of your machines.
    2. Continue with option 2a to completion.
  3. a. Local Dropbox Install

    b. Website

  4. Go to the computer with the new dropbox account on it.
When dropbox opens and ensures that everything is synchronized, it should pop up to say that your regular dropbox account wants to share a folder with you (this may also show up in your email).
  5. Accept it.
  6. Enjoy still having your files synchronized to all of your chosen machines, and not have to worry about taking too much space up from this smaller machine you’ve acquired. :)
